Exercise Physiology is the study of acute and chronic adaptations associated with physical activity and exercise training. The major comprises the study of how exercise impacts health and human performance and prescribing individualized exercise programs to meet participant health, fitness and human performance goals. A degree in exercise physiology serves as a pathway to direct employment and provides prerequisite education to pursue advanced study at the graduate level. If a future career involves movement, allied health, or medicine then a degree in exercise physiology is an excellent credential.
Graduates are employed in fields such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, athletic training, strength and conditioning, sports performance, cardiopulmonary and oncology rehabilitation, clinical exercise physiology, dietetics, sports nutrition, medicine (physician, physician assistant), pharmaceutical sales, health coaching, education, and many more. The Bachelor of Science in exercise physiology degree is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs () upon the recommendation of the Committee on Accreditation for Exercise Sciences. Certification
Graduates of exercise physiology are academically prepared to sit for the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) Certified Exercise Physiologist examination. Experiential Learning
The exercise physiology major engages students in intensive experiential hands-on learning-by-doing, connecting the knowledge and concepts learned in the classroom to the skills and abilities required in real-world situations. Every course has hands-on learning opportunities, and the degree accumulates with a 400-hour, 12 credit hour supervised internship in a professional workplace directly tied to exercise physiology. The minimal expectations are to prepare competent entry-level Exercise Physiology professionals in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains.
Admissions Requirements
- Declared major in Exercise Physiology.
- Completion of all Core IMPACTS as it pertains to the Exercise Physiology curriculum.
- A grade of “C” or better in all Writing, STEM and Field of Study Courses, including lab sections.
- A 2.00 overall grade point average.
There is no cap on the number of students admitted into Exercise Physiology Jr/Sr curriculum. Admission into Exercise Physiology major curriculum is each fall and spring terms (no summer admission).
MAJOR REQUIREMENTS
“C” or better in all Exercise Physiology major coursework at the 3000 and 4000 level and a 2.00 cumulative, overall grade point average.
Progress and Retention
Once admitted into the program, classes are taken in blocks, 1 through 4, in sequence (program map). Students must maintain a C or better in all upper-level Exercise Physiology major courses. To be eligible for any 3rd block courses students must have earned a C or better in all 1st and 2nd block courses. An exception to the 3rd block policy is having to repeat just one (1) 2nd block course. To be eligible for HSEP 4510 Practicum students must have a returned graduation application from the registrar and be currently enrolled in all remaining courses required for graduation excluding HSEP 4550 Internship. To be eligible for the 4th block Internship (HSEP 4550) students must have a C or better in all 3rd block courses and meet all other pre-requisites for the Internship course.

Employment of exercise physiologists is projected to grow by 13 percent over the next decade, faster than the average for all occupations. Demand is rising as hospitals emphasize exercise and preventive care to help patients recover from cardiovascular, pulmonary and cancer diseases and improve their overall health. The demand for strength-training and sports performance experts is one of the top five most promising employment trends over the next several years.
