Dr. Hanae Kanno
Associate Professor, Social Work
Dr. Hanae Kanno, MSW, MA, Ph.D. currently is an Associate Professor in Master of Social Work (MSW) program at Valdosta State University (蜜桃影像传媒有限公司网站) Department of Human Services. She has served the MSW Program at 蜜桃影像传媒有限公司网站 since 2010. She is originally from Tokyo, Japan. She received Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Communication and Women’s Studies at Tokyo Woman’s Christian University, Tokyo, Japan in 1997 and received Master of Arts (MA) in Social Work at the Graduate School of Social Science in Tokyo Metropolitan University, Tokyo, Japan in 1999. Then, she came to the United States to study social work at University of Pittsburgh School of Social Work, Pennsylvania. She received Master of Social Work (MSW) in 2006 and received Ph.D. in the University of Pittsburgh School of Social Work in 2010.
She received Faculty Excellence Award in Research by Valdosta State University College of Education and Human Services in 2020.
She serves as the Chair of the Curriculum and Assessment Committees in MSW Program, 蜜桃影像传媒有限公司网站. She also serves as a lead faculty supervisor of Graduate Social Work Student Organization (GSWO) in MSW Program, 蜜桃影像传媒有限公司网站. Further, she serves as the Chair of several Dissertation Committees for doctoral students in Doctor of Public Administration (DPA) program, 蜜桃影像传媒有限公司网站.
In MSW program in Valdosta State University, she mainly teaches the courses of Research Methods, Program Evaluation, Organizations and Communities, and Violence and Trauma. Her special area in social work research and practice is violence and trauma. As a social worker, Dr. Kanno worked with female trauma victims of domestic violence and female homeless at domestic violence shelters and residential institutions for single mothers and their children in Japan. Over the past 20 years Dr. Kanno has studied violence and trauma faced by social workers in their workplace including Client Violence against Social Workers and Secondary Traumatic Stress/Compassion Fatigue in Social Workers in the United States and Japan. Dr. Kanno has also engaged in research at the areas of family violence such as domestic violence and elder abuse in the United States and Japan.
Dr. Kanno has made more than 80 reginal, national, and international professional presentations in the United States., Australia, Ireland, Sweden, Croatia, Japan, South Korea, and China. Dr. Kanno has published one book and many scholarly articles including peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters, and encyclopedia entries. The main topics of her professional presentations and scholarly articles are on Secondary Traumatic Stress/Compassion Fatigue, Burnout, and Psychological Distress in Social Workers and Mental Health Workers, Client Violence against Social Workers, Family Violence, Mental Health in Diverse Populations, and Social Work and Field Education. Dr. Kanno has served as the Editorial Board member of the International Journal of Social Science and Business and a manuscript reviewer for academic journals such as the Journal of Social Work Education, the Journal of Gerontological Social Work, British Journal of Social Work, and the Journal of Traumatic Stress. Dr. Kanno has held membership in 11 national and international professional organizations in the United States and Japan such as Council on Social Work Education (CSWE), Society for Social Work and Research (SSWR), the CSWE Asian Pacific Islander Social
Work Educators Association (APISWEA) Association, Japanese Society for the Study of Social Welfare, and Japanese Society for the Study of Social Work.
Nationwide, she severs as the Public Relations of the CSWE Asian and Pacific Islander Social Work Educators Association (APISWEA). Regionally, she serves as a Board member of Lowndes Associated Ministries to People Ink (LAMP, a homeless shelter) in Valdosta, 蜜桃影像传媒有限公司网站 and a music therapist at My Friend’s House, the Alzheimer Day Care Center in Valdosta, 蜜桃影像传媒有限公司网站.
